Arthritis – Keeping your older cats comfortable

Arthritis is a common condition we see in older cats and the damp, cold winter months can make them more uncomfortable. As we know, this species is exceptionally good at hiding signs of discomfort, so here are some things to look out for:

-A hesitation or reluctance to jump up or down from things or using stairs

-Toileting outside of the litter tray

-Poor grooming, matts developing around the hind quarters

-Sleeping more than usual, or being less active

-A change in behaviour to people, other cats or a reduced tolerance to handling

If you have noticed any of these signs, we have some options to help your cat. These can be in the form of pain relief but also changes to their environment. Here are some tips to adapting your home to aid a cat with arthritis:

-Having multiple litter trays in different places and ensuring the sides aren’t too tall so they can get in and out easily

-Make sure food and water is easy to access

-Having ramps or boxes to aid them jumping up to spaces they like to get to

-Providing plenty of cosy, padded beds in warm areas of the house
